FAQs

Our lip balm line is organic, in the sense that all the ingredients used are certified organic however we have not certified our production space yet and hence our products do not yet carry any organic certification.

Our soap lines are not organic. Actually, no soap on the planet Earth is organic because approximately 20% of all soap is caustic, otherwise known as lye. Specifically, in bar soap the caustic is sodium hydroxide, whereas in liquid soap the caustic is potassium hydroxide. Neither of these caustics are organic, in fact they are inorganic compounds. As per the FDA and most world bodies governing food and topical products, more than 95% of a product’s ingredients must be organic for the product to be marketed as organic, hence it is impossible for any soap to ever be legally advertised as being organic.

Having said that, the oils used in the soap formula could be organic. Not all of the oils that we use are organic although we strive to procure organic and fair-trade ingredients whenever possible. Needless to say, organic oils can be very expensive, and we really want to make natural soap a household staple, so it is often not possible to use all organic oils because it would result in costs too high for the average household to afford. As organic farming becomes more attainable and organic certification less expensive for farmers to upkeep, we look forward to adding more and more organic oils into our warehouse.

Our soap line is certified vegan, cruelty free certified, and dermatologically tested and approved. It is not organic, nor is any soap on the market organic because all soap is made using a caustic which is sodium hydroxide in bar soap and potassium hydroxide in liquid soap. These caustics are inorganic materials hence it is impossible for any soap to be legally advertised as organic. An experienced soap maker ensures that no caustic is present in the final product, but simply used to saponify the oils in the formula.

Our lip balm line is organic as it is made exclusively with organic raw materials.

Unfortunately we don’t. We can’t efficiently and sustainably offer a free sample program because of the cost of shipping. We do offer a satisfaction guarantee simply because we don’t ever want to have dissatisfied customers. If for any reason you are not happy with our product, please send us a quick note, tell us what went wrong and we will make things right for you.

We are huge proponents of full transparency and integrity when it comes to product ingredients. We ensure the ingredients we use are as real, natural and crude as possible and that they are procured from ethically and sustainably appropriate sources. All of our products have their ingredients clearly outlined on the product page.

We get this a lot and the answer is a resounding YES there is such a thing as sustainable palm oil and it is a great initiative headed by the RSPO foundation. We have a full page dedicated to Sustainable Palm oil for your reference. The reason we use sustainable palm oil is because it is a “hard” oil (solid at room temperature) that yields a hard, long lasting bar, high in palmitic and oleic acid which offers unrivaled skin conditioning properties.

Absolutely not. Never. Our products are certified cruelty free which means that in addition to not testing on animals in our process, none of our suppliers test on animals either. It helps to be 100% natural so really, the most dangerous ingredients we work with are essential oils; having said that, they are very potent oils and should never be used at full strength.

Our bar soap and liquid soap lines are both exclusively vegan, and they are certified as such by Vegan.org. When it comes to topical products, being vegan is all about sustainability of planet and its beings, as well as ethics – not contributing to unnecessary animal cruelty.

Our lip balm line is not vegan because we do use beeswax to form them. This was a decision that we did not take lightly. It came down to weighing the pros and cons of the alternatives which are soy wax, carnauba wax and candelilla wax. The methods of extraction of the above waxes are far from sustainable as they utilize sulphuric acid. And ironically soy farming is in fact far more harmful to bees than beeswax harvesting is. Pesticides and other chemicals used in mass farming are killing bees at alarming rates. Some bees can certainly be harmed by beeswax harvesting; frankly it depends on the specific beekeeper’s process. However beeswax capping of hives is a natural process because you simply cannot harvest honey without eventually harvesting beeswax as well. As with many things in life, moderation is key. It’s important to realize that it is in nobody’s best interest to harm bees. Beekeepers want nothing more than to have healthy, happy bees that produce lots and lots of honey for them. For now, this is our stance on the use of beeswax. We are continuously educating ourselves on making the most sustainable choices for our products and our business in general.
