The almond tree is originally from Iran but is now cultivated around the world, most notably in California where nearly two million tonnes of almonds are harvested every year. The earliest domestication of its seeds dates back as far as the Early Bronze Age (3000-2000 BCE). Traditionally, almonds were cultivated directly from seed with no need for grafting or cuttings.
Today, almonds are cultivated using millions of honey bees to pollinate and fertilize its flowers. But, the cost of production has gone way up due to the endangerment of honey bees. So, the Agriculture Research Service (ARS) has genetically modified almond trees to self-pollinate. However, these self-pollinating trees are not as sought after as the traditional trees that need bees because they produce fruit that has a thicker shell but a smaller seed. This isn't to say they aren't useful since the thicker shell is effective at protecting the seed from disease and infestation.
The almond is made up of four percent water, 22% carbohydrates, 21% protein and 50% fat, making it an ideal source for a plant-based oil. After the harvest, the almonds are husked and dried before the extraction process. There are two ways that almond oil is extracted from the seed. The first is when the almond oil is extracted using high-heat processing and chemicals. Refined almond oil takes less time, but the high heat breaks down much of the nutrients found in raw almonds. A couple of benefits are they can withstand higher temperatures and is less expensive to produce so it's a great cost-effective option.
The other is when the raw almonds are pressed using no heat or chemical agents resulting in unrefined almond oil. What's more, it doesn't go through high temperatures so much of the nutrients in raw almonds are retained, making a great option for culinary and cosmetic purposes.
Unrefined almond oil is a great source of vitamin E; a powerful antioxidant that promotes cell turnover, it also has anti-ageing properties and protects your skin from sun damage. Vitamin E is also amazing for reducing scarring and stretch marks while promoting healing. One study in 160 women found that the topical application of almond oil reduced the spread of stretch marks in the abdominal area, as well as redness and itching.
Further, it's also a beloved ingredient in many cosmetic products, including lip balms, hair care and skin care. Almond oil lip balm in particular conditions and restores your dry lips, maintains your skin at a cellular level and protects your delicate skin from sun damage.
